Through Boksburg SPCA’s Outreach Programme, the team focuses on improving the lives of community animals who have limited access to veterinary care. A strong focus is placed primary healthcare (tick & flea prevention, dipping, deworming), education and the benefits of sterilisation is shared with pet owners.
Our Outreach Team focuses on an dedicated area – where needs are identified by our Inspectorate – on a three month rotational basis. Our team then service this area weekly, every Tuesday 12h00-15h00, so that we can have an impact on the animals living there. The weekly programme encourages pet owners to bring their animals for treatment, deworming, dipping and any medical issues.
Knowledge on various illnesses is shared thereby making owners aware of when to call for assistance and our emergency number is made available to the community. With our door-to-door initiative the Inspectors and Field Officers take the opportunity to engage with owners and where necessary offer guidance in improving the living conditions, ie: appropriate dog/animals shelters, ensuring clean food, water, chaining, suitable collars etc.
Working weekly with the community builds good relationships, so that even after the team have moved onto the next location/area, the community are able to call for any assistance needed.
