We changed from a solid trapezium base, which made the rack look\nrather heavy and \u2018blocky\u2019 to a slatted base using three lengths of 9x44mm\nmeranti cover strip. We also changed the positions of the bottle neck holes on two\nof the shelves to allow the rack to accommodate the wine bottles with greater\nease&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Materials:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Meranti: 22x144mm x 1.83m  one length  cut to four legs, each 180mm long, mitred at a parallel 45\u00b0 angle at each end<ul><li>9x44mm x 1.83m cover strip  one length  cut to three lengths\u2026 two of 520mm and one of 560mm<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Screws: one dozen 30mm mirror screws; four 45mm mirror screws plus two or four wall plugs; 1 dozen 40mm wood screws<\/li><li>*Galvanised brackets: three 75mm brackets<\/li><li>Finish: of your choice; we chose clear gloss varnish <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>*<em>No glue was used in this rack, but if you wish to dispense\nwith the brackets, and therefore also the 30mm mirror screws, then you can use\nglue to secure the shelf joins.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Method:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>First of all, we used two bottles of wine to establish how long each shelf would be. We also selected the best sides for the front and used masking tape to indicate the back surfaces.<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lion-test-sites.co.za\/mica-new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/MICA-ZZWR-5-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Wine Project 5\" class=\"wp-image-41533\"\/><\/figure><\/li><li>This was cutting the original base at 45\u00b0.<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lion-test-sites.co.za\/mica-new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/MICA-ZZWR-6-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Wine Project 6\" class=\"wp-image-41533\"\/><\/figure><\/li><li>This is how the original design looked\u2026 the base making it look quite \u2018blocky\u2019.<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lion-test-sites.co.za\/mica-new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/MICA-ZZWR-7-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Wine Project 7\" class=\"wp-image-41533\"\/><\/figure><\/li><li>We also changed the positions of the bottle neck holes on two of the shelves\u2026 originally they were made at an angle, as shown here. Subsequently we changed them to across the axis of the shelf at 90\u00b0 so that the necks of the bottles would pass safely between the two bottles on the self below.<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lion-test-sites.co.za\/mica-new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/MICA-ZZWR-8-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Wine Project 8\" class=\"wp-image-41533\"\/><\/figure><\/li><li>When using a hole saw, it is best to cut through just over halfway, and then flip the workpiece over and complete the holes from the other side\u2026 this ensures a clean cut on both surfaces and also makes removing the wood plug from the hole saw without too much effort\u2026 if the whole of the plug is lodged in the hole saw cup it can be difficult to remove. (Drilling through completely from one side only can result is a jagged, chipped cut on the lower surface  unless the workpiece is firmly clamped to a piece of scrap, in which case the saw cuts slightly into that as well.) However\u2026 making the holes from both sides can leave a jagged junction between the two in the middle of the cut. Easily fixed\u2026 a roll of sandpaper inserted into the hole and rotated a few times cleans up the hole. <figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lion-test-sites.co.za\/mica-new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/MICA-ZZWR-9-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Wine Project 9\" class=\"wp-image-41533\"\/><\/figure><\/li><li>Here\u2019s the contrast between the two holes\u2026 the one on the left still to be cleaned up, the one on the right already cleaned.<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lion-test-sites.co.za\/mica-new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/MICA-ZZWR-10-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Wine Project 10\" class=\"wp-image-41533\"\/><\/figure><\/li><li>With two sides clamped firmly together, we attached the 75mm galvanised bracket, using 30mm\u00d8 mirror screws to join them. Take care to centre the brackets on the shelves as accurately as possible.<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lion-test-sites.co.za\/mica-new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/MICA-ZZWR-11-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Wine Project 11\" class=\"wp-image-41533\"\/><\/figure><\/li><li>The completed shelves.<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lion-test-sites.co.za\/mica-new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/MICA-ZZWR-12-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Wine Project 12\" class=\"wp-image-41533\"\/><\/figure><\/li><li>With the revised bottle positions note how the two holes in each adjacent shelf allow the bottle to rest in position without impinging on each other.<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lion-test-sites.co.za\/mica-new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/MICA-ZZWR-13-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Wine Project 13\" class=\"wp-image-41533\"\/><\/figure><\/li><li>Now for the changed base\u2026 we attached the first 520mm length of cover strip as shown here, with the side of each meeting the shelf joins, and using the wood screws to secure the batten and also reinforce the join between the shelves.<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lion-test-sites.co.za\/mica-new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/MICA-ZZWR-14-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Wine Project 14\" class=\"wp-image-41533\"\/><\/figure><\/li><li>With the first attached, use a square to align its opposite number on the other side and repeat the attachment procedure.<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lion-test-sites.co.za\/mica-new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/MICA-ZZWR-15-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Wine Project 15\" class=\"wp-image-41533\"\/><\/figure><\/li><li>We then added the middle 560mm batten, in exactly the same fashion\u2026 the rack\u2019s dimensions allow for a gap of about 10mm between the battens, but with the batten biased towards what will be the top of the rack.<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lion-test-sites.co.za\/mica-new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/MICA-ZZWR-16-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Wine Project 16\" class=\"wp-image-41533\"\/><\/figure><\/li><li>It is always best to sand each part individually before fixing them in position, and then finishing off with a final sanding. We applied three coats of varnish, sanding lightly after the first and second coats, for a smooth finish.<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lion-test-sites.co.za\/mica-new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/MICA-ZZWR-17-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Wine Project 17\" class=\"wp-image-41533\"\/><\/figure><\/li><li>We drilled two holes in the middle batten\u2026 this is the top of the rack\u2026<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lion-test-sites.co.za\/mica-new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/MICA-ZZWR-18-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Wine Project 18\" class=\"wp-image-41533\"\/><\/figure><\/li><li>This is the bottom of the rack\u2026 using two 45mm mirror screws to attach the rack to a wall ensures that it will not swing as bottle are added or removed.
