{"id":1536,"date":"2014-09-08T08:10:51","date_gmt":"2014-09-08T08:10:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/?p=1536"},"modified":"2014-09-08T08:22:27","modified_gmt":"2014-09-08T08:22:27","slug":"make-display-cabinet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lion-test-sites.co.za\/mica-new\/make-display-cabinet\/","title":{"rendered":"Make a Display Cabinet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Project Guide:<\/strong><br \/>\nDifficulty: Intermediate\/advanced<br \/>\nEstimated time: two weekends<br \/>\nCost: Dependent on size<\/p>\n<p><strong>What you will need:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This case was designed for displaying part of a knife collection so because the average knife is little more than 20-25mm at its widest part &#8211; the handle,  we were able to use:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"listStyles\">\n<li>22x44mm meranti for the case<\/li>\n<li>22x22mm meranti for the door frame.<\/li>\n<li>We have purposely omitted giving dimensions except where necessary where pieces fit together, so you can size your cabinet according to what you will keep in it. For instance, if you\u2019re going to display somewhat bulkier items, then using 69mm or even 96mm timber for the main case could be necessary.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Method:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol class=\"listStyles\">\n<li>To start, when you select your timber, check each piece very carefully. Timber is sold in nominal sizes, and as you can see here, it can vary from piece to piece by a millimetre or two &#8211; so select and ensure you get pieces that match in cross section  and also, of course, that it is not warped or otherwise distorted.<\/li>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/display-cabinet-1.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Display Cabinet Image 1\"\/><\/p>\n<li>We recessed the door, so we marked off the width of the rebate.<\/li>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/display-cabinet-2.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Display Cabinet Image 2\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Depending on which way you will be routing the timber, you can set the router to the depth of the door timber and set your fence, or to 12mm, in my case, and rout to a width of 22mm. We allowed for a rebate of 22mm deep by 12mm wide.<\/li>\n<p>  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/display-cabinet-3.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Display Cabinet Image 3\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Then rout the rebate, taking off about 3mm with each pass.<\/li>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/display-cabinet-4.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Display Cabinet Image 4\"\/><\/p>\n<li>The completed rebate.<\/li>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/display-cabinet-5.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Display Cabinet Image 5\"\/><\/p>\n<li>At this stage, you can begin with the door. We used glass (3x900x900mm) that had already been purchased. <\/li>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/display-cabinet-6.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Display Cabinet Image 6\"\/><\/p>\n<li>We used a biscuit cutter set to a depth of 12mm to cut the grooves for the glass, using the timber itself as a fence guide to ensure the grooves were accurate.<\/li>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/display-cabinet-7.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Display Cabinet Image 7\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Mitre one end of the door timber.<\/li>\n<p>  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/display-cabinet-8.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Display Cabinet Image 8\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Carefully measure off the doorframe pieces and mitre each end.<\/li>\n<p>  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/display-cabinet-9.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Display Cabinet Image 9\"\/><\/p>\n<li>This is how the glass sits in the groove.<\/li>\n<p>  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/display-cabinet-10.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Display Cabinet Image 10\"\/><\/p>\n<li>The 12mm groove leaves 10mm of timber to hold the glass.<\/li>\n<p>  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/display-cabinet-11.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Display Cabinet Image 11\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Then we assembled the frame using 30mm panel pins as shown to reinforce each mitred corner.<\/li>\n<p>  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/display-cabinet-12.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Display Cabinet Image 12\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Use a punch to countersink each panel pin.<\/li>\n<p>  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/display-cabinet-13.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Display Cabinet Image 13\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Apply filler and once it is dry, sand it down flat with the surface. Finally, I added a doorknob to the centre of the side opposite the side on which I was going to hinge the door.<\/li>\n<p>  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/display-cabinet-14.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Display Cabinet Image 14\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Now back to the main frame; set the router to a depth of 3mm and rout the rebate for the pegboard backing.<\/li>\n<p>  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/display-cabinet-15.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Display Cabinet Image 15\"\/><\/p>\n<li>The completed rebate &#8211; with the 3mm sample fitting into the rebate neatly.<\/li>\n<p>  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/display-cabinet-16.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Display Cabinet Image 16\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Mitre one end of the frame timber.<\/li>\n<p>  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/display-cabinet-17.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Display Cabinet Image 17\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Set it against the door and measure off the length.<\/li>\n<p>  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/display-cabinet-18.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Display Cabinet Image 18\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Since the door fits within the frame &#8211; allow for some clearance  we used two rules to give 2mm clearance.<\/li>\n<p>  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/display-cabinet-19.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Display Cabinet Image 19\"\/><\/p>\n<li>You may have to trim the end a little if the timber has been colour coded as here; sometimes the ends of the times are also a little rough, so you need to mitre 20mm or so from the end.<\/li>\n<p>  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/display-cabinet-20.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Display Cabinet Image 20\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Here\u2019s a handy strap clamp\u2026 get hold of some webbing, pass it around the frame and clamp the ends as shown. Then insert two blocks as shown.<\/li>\n<p>  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/display-cabinet-21.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Display Cabinet Image 21\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Now clamp the blocks together; the strap is pulled tight, and clamps the frame together while the glue cures.<\/li>\n<p>  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/display-cabinet-22.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Display Cabinet Image 22\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Reinforce the frame\u2019s corners as per the door and sand now &#8211; you will find it easier.<\/li>\n<p>  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/display-cabinet-23.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Display Cabinet Image 23\"\/><\/p>\n<li>The completed frame.<\/li>\n<p>  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/display-cabinet-24.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Display Cabinet Image 24\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Tape off the edges of the pegboard slightly narrower than the rebate into which they will fit into the frame.<\/li>\n<p>  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/display-cabinet-25.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Display Cabinet Image 25\"\/><\/p>\n<li>The tape is completely hidden, so you can now paint the pegboard -we chose green, to approximate green baize.<\/li>\n<p>  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/display-cabinet-26.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Display Cabinet Image 26\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Peel the tape off, and the virgin wood is exposed.<\/li>\n<p>  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/display-cabinet-27.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Display Cabinet Image 27\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Apply glue and clamp the board into the frame.<\/li>\n<p>  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/display-cabinet-28.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Display Cabinet Image 28\"\/><\/p>\n<li>The pegboard backing in place. <\/li>\n<p>  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/display-cabinet-29.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Display Cabinet Image 29\"\/><\/p>\n<li>As we were using hooks, we needed to set the cabinet a little way off the wall, and so each of the four mirror screws used to attach the cabinet to the wall has a 12mm spacer block.<\/li>\n<p>  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/display-cabinet-30.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Display Cabinet Image 30\"\/><\/p>\n<li>The lock and hasp system &#8211; we had to use it as this is a very shallow cabinet.<\/li>\n<p>  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/display-cabinet-31.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Display Cabinet Image 31\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Bend the hasp through 90\u00b0 as shown.<\/li>\n<p>  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/display-cabinet-32.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Display Cabinet Image 32\"\/><\/p>\n<li>We selected a 6mm bolt and filed two sides flat.<\/li>\n<p>  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/display-cabinet-33.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Display Cabinet Image 33\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Then we drilled a 3mm hole through the centre &#8211; using a paper dust catcher as shown here keeps mess to a minimum. Tape the plugs into the wall, and mount the cabinet on the wall.<\/li>\n<p>  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/display-cabinet-41.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Display Cabinet Image 41\"\/><\/p>\n<li>For hinges, we used just two screws\u2026 use a spacer to centre the door as you want it, and then drill a hole slightly smaller than the diameter of the screw through the doorframe and into the main frame.<\/li>\n<p>  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/display-cabinet-42.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Display Cabinet Image 42\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Then enlarge the frame hole to slightly larger than the screw, so that the latter is not loosened as the door is opened and closed.
