{"id":1504,"date":"2014-09-05T14:50:08","date_gmt":"2014-09-05T14:50:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/?p=1504"},"modified":"2014-09-05T14:52:59","modified_gmt":"2014-09-05T14:52:59","slug":"make-drying-rack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lion-test-sites.co.za\/mica-new\/make-drying-rack\/","title":{"rendered":"Make a Drying Rack"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Project Guide:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Difficulty: Beginner<br \/>\n  Estimated time: 4-5 hours<br \/>\n  Cost: R50-R75 <\/p>\n<p><strong>What you will need:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"listStyles\">\n<li>Meranti  19x19x2.4m*<\/li>\n<li>Six 482x10mm dowels (the dowels are cut to 482mm and are available in a variety of lengths, so you\u2019ll need a total of about 3m)<\/li>\n<li>Four 75mm 6mm gutter bolts<\/li>\n<li>12 washers and four 6mm dome nuts**<\/li>\n<li>1m light chain<\/li>\n<li>Four screws (to secure chain)<\/li>\n<li>Wood glue<\/li>\n<li>Finish of your choice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i>*Should you decide to alter the dimensions on the rack for your own use, then naturally, the amount of material required will differ  up or down.<br \/>\n** If you decide to simplify the join (see picture  Alternative join), you can dispense with one pair of nuts, bolts and washers.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><strong>Method:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol class=\"listStyles\">\n<li>A handy drying rack for the home  and foldable enough that you can slip it into your car\u2019s boot before a weekend break  can be a lifesaver when you need somewhere dry a swimming costume or underwear. The basic materials you will need.\n<\/li>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/drying-rack-1.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Drying Rack Image 1\"\/><\/p>\n<li>For a width of 500mm, mark the dowels at 482mm.\n<\/li>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/drying-rack-2.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Drying Rack Image 2\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Cut each one ensuring that each is exactly the same length.\n<\/li>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/drying-rack-3.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Drying Rack Image 3\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Mark the uprights for a length of 750mm,\n<\/li>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/drying-rack-4.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Drying Rack Image 4\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Cut each to length, again ensuring that each is precisely the same length.\n<\/li>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/drying-rack-5.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Drying Rack Image 5\"\/><\/p>\n<li>In addition, if using the joining method I used here  so that the rack could fold absolutely flat, cut two extra crosspieces of 19x19mm meranti to a length of 50mm.\n<\/li>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/drying-rack-6.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Drying Rack Image 6\"\/><\/p>\n<li>It is easier if one sand down all surfaces prior to assembly.\n<\/li>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/drying-rack-7.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Drying Rack Image 7\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Position the crosspieces as shown and mark off the centres.\n<\/li>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/drying-rack-8.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Drying Rack Image 8\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Then drill the 6mm holes for the bolts.\n<\/li>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/drying-rack-9.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Drying Rack Image 9\"\/><\/p>\n<li>To ensure full and free movement, trim the tops of the uprights as shown, and then do a trial connection to ensure the rack with open and shut without any problems.\n<\/li>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/drying-rack-10.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Drying Rack Image 10\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Mark the position of the top dowel at 120mm from the top, and the other two spaced equally at 200mm centre to centre.\n<\/li>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/drying-rack-11.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Drying Rack Image 11\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Use the markings on the first upright and transcribe them on to the other three uprights.\n<\/li>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/drying-rack-12.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Drying Rack Image 12\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Mark off the centreline of the uprights.\n<\/li>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/drying-rack-13.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Drying Rack Image 13\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Use a length of masking tape, at 10mm from the drill bit\u2019s tip, to set the depth of each dowel hole.\n<\/li>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/drying-rack-14.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Drying Rack Image 14\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Take care when drill the holes that you do not got too deep, and you are dead centre  and vertical.\n<\/li>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/drying-rack-15.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" alt=\"DIY Drying Rack Image 15\"\/><\/p>\n<li>The first dowel holes drilled; sand the surface now to achieve a smooth finish  you do not want your pantyhose being snagged.\n<\/li>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/drying-rack-16.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Drying Rack Image 16\"\/><\/p>\n<li>A spread to suit our bath is 650mm, so spread the feet to that dimension, and marked off the bevel as shown, so that the feet rest flat on the bath\u2019s rim.\n<\/li>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/drying-rack-17.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Drying Rack Image 17\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Fill the dowel holes with glue (not too much  enough to secure the join), insert the dowels and clamp the two section of the rack together as shown; if the dowels are parallel, than your work thus far has been accurate.\n<\/li>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/drying-rack-18.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Drying Rack Image 18\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Now the bolts need to be trimmed to length. The dome nuts seat to just on 10-11mm, to turn a nut on to the bolt  on the bolt-head side  trim it to length, and then turn the nut off. This aligns the bolt\u2019s thread and gets rid of any burrs left after the cutting.\n<\/li>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/drying-rack-19.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Drying Rack Image 19\"\/><\/p>\n<li>The bolt cut to length  note that I took the washers into account before cutting the bolt.\n<\/li>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/drying-rack-20.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Drying Rack Image 20\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Apply the finish of your choice and assemble the rack  note how the join with the two 50mm crosspieces linking the uprights allows the rack to fold absolutely flat.\n<\/li>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/drying-rack-21.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" alt=\"DIY Drying Rack Image 21\"\/><\/p>\n<li>This is the alternative, simpler join, but note that the rack will not fold absolutely flat as the top dowels will prevent it from doing so  the closest it ill get to flat would be in the form of the figure \u2019A\u2019.\n  <\/li>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/drying-rack-22.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"DIY Drying Rack Image 22\"\/><\/p>\n<li>The completed Drying Rack.\n  <\/li>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/drying-rack-complete.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" alt=\"DIY Drying Rack Image 23\"\/>\n<\/p><\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You\u2019ve been swimming, you\u2019re not at home  and you need somewhere to dry your swimming costume?
