{"id":1499,"date":"2014-09-05T14:25:54","date_gmt":"2014-09-05T14:25:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/?p=1499"},"modified":"2017-10-06T09:20:35","modified_gmt":"2017-10-06T09:20:35","slug":"make-floating-shelves","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lion-test-sites.co.za\/mica-new\/make-floating-shelves\/","title":{"rendered":"Make Floating Shelves"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>    <strong>What you will need:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"listStyles\">The shelves are all meranti, 144x12x385mm, the base<br \/>\n    is SA pine, 144x12x560mm, and the five front pieces are 144x22x35mm (bottom<br \/>\n    piece), three centre pieces each 22x144x130mm and a fifth, top piece, which<br \/>\n    is 22x144x90mm. You, however, can adapt these dimensions as you see fit.<br \/>\n    The only point we would make is this: don\u2019t make the shelves too deep as<br \/>\n    they are held only by the portion that is in the gap between the front<br \/>\n    pieces mounted on the base  and those front pieces should be at least 22mm<br \/>\n    thick, as here.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Method:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol class=\"listStyles\">\n<li>Cut four or however many shelves you plan for your unit. <\/li>\n<p><img alt=\n        \"Floating Shelves Image 1\" height=\"300\" src=\n        \"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/floating-shelves-1.jpg\"\n        width=\"400\"\/><\/p>\n<li>We selected four, cut from 12x144mm meranti. <\/li>\n<p><img alt=\n        \"Floating Shelves Image 2\" height=\"300\" src=\n        \"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/floating-shelves-2.jpg\"\n        width=\"400\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Position them on a length that will become your base, and only then<br \/>\n        decide on a length for the latter, then cut it to length. <\/li>\n<p><img alt=\n        \"Floating Shelves Image 3\" height=\"300\" src=\n        \"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/floating-shelves-3.jpg\"\n        width=\"400\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Initially we were looking at the bottom piece being 20mm wide, but<br \/>\n        decided that that would be too narrow and weak. So, we changed it to<br \/>\n        35mm. <\/li>\n<p><img alt=\"Floating Shelves Image 4\" height=\"300\" src=\n        \"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/floating-shelves-4.jpg\"\n        width=\"400\"\/><\/p>\n<li>We used some scrap block board for the front pieces, and\u2026 <\/li>\n<p><img alt=\n        \"Floating Shelves Image 5\" height=\"300\" src=\n        \"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/floating-shelves-5.jpg\"\n        width=\"400\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Cut the five pieces  all 22x144mm wide, but 35mm, 90mm, and then<br \/>\n        three pieces 130mm deep. <\/li>\n<p><img alt=\"Floating Shelves Image 6\" height=\n        \"300\" src=\n        \"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/floating-shelves-6.jpg\"\n        width=\"400\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Using some offcuts from the shelves, to confirm everything matched<br \/>\n        up. <\/li>\n<p><img alt=\"Floating Shelves Image 7\" height=\"265\" src=\n        \"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/floating-shelves-7.jpg\"\n        width=\"400\"\/><\/p>\n<li>The components  10 in all. <\/li>\n<p><img alt=\"Floating Shelves Image 8\"\n        height=\"292\" src=\n        \"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/floating-shelves-8.jpg\"\n        width=\"400\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Smarten up the edges a little with a concave router contour.\n        <\/li>\n<p><img alt=\"Floating Shelves Image 9\" height=\"300\" src=\n        \"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/floating-shelves-9.jpg\"\n        width=\"400\"\/><\/p>\n<li>The easies way to rout the edges is by clamping the front pieces<br \/>\n        together and then routing along the edges in one go. <\/li>\n<p><img alt=\n        \"Floating Shelves Image 10\" height=\"300\" src=\n        \"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/floating-shelves-10.jpg\"\n        width=\"400\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Here\u2019s the result  clamping them together actually makes them<br \/>\n        easier to handle. Of course, you could also rout the single length<br \/>\n        you\u2019ve selected for the front pieces, and then cut each to length. I\u2019ve<br \/>\n        only just thought of that, so try it. <\/li>\n<p><img alt=\n        \"Floating Shelves Image 11\" height=\"300\" src=\n        \"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/floating-shelves-11.jpg\"\n        width=\"400\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Routing across the ends risks chipping, and the answer is to clamp<br \/>\n        both ends together, between two pieces of scrap of the same thickness<br \/>\n        in this case, 22mm. <\/li>\n<p><img alt=\"Floating Shelves Image 12\" height=\"300\"\n        src=\n        \"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/floating-shelves-12.jpg\"\n        width=\"400\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Then rout them <\/li>\n<p><img alt=\"Floating Shelves Image 13\" height=\"300\"\n        src=\n        \"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/floating-shelves-13.jpg\"\n        width=\"400\"\/><\/p>\n<li>And this is the result  no chipping. <\/li>\n<p><img alt=\n        \"Floating Shelves Image 14\" height=\"300\" src=\n        \"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/floating-shelves-14.jpg\"\n        width=\"400\"\/><\/p>\n<li>You can clean up the ends, and any other concave routed contour,<br \/>\n        with a suitable dowel and sandpaper. <\/li>\n<p><img alt=\n        \"Floating Shelves Image 15\" height=\"300\" src=\n        \"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/floating-shelves-15.jpg\"\n        width=\"400\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Sand down the surfaces. <\/li>\n<p><img alt=\"Floating Shelves Image 16\"\n        height=\"300\" src=\n        \"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/floating-shelves-16.jpg\"\n        width=\"400\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Apply glue to the back of the bottom piece and\u2026 <\/li>\n<p><img alt=\n        \"Floating Shelves Image 17\" height=\"300\" src=\n        \"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/floating-shelves-17.jpg\"\n        width=\"400\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Clamp it firmly in position. <\/li>\n<p><img alt=\"Floating Shelves Image 18\"\n        height=\"300\" src=\n        \"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/floating-shelves-18.jpg\"\n        width=\"400\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Insert a couple of spacers from the offcuts of the shelves, and<br \/>\n        glue the next front piece into position. <\/li>\n<p><img alt=\n        \"Floating Shelves Image 19\" height=\"300\" src=\n        \"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/floating-shelves-19.jpg\"\n        width=\"400\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Carry on until you have attached each front piece in position; note<br \/>\n        the spacers between each, so that the shelves will fit very snugly.<br \/>\n        Allow the glue to dry; if you wish, you can drive small screws through<br \/>\n        the back of the base to secure the front pieces even more strongly.\n        <\/li>\n<p><img alt=\"Floating Shelves Image 20\" height=\"300\" src=\n        \"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/floating-shelves-20.jpg\"\n        width=\"400\"\/><\/p>\n<li>The attachment screws go through the base  and won\u2019t be visible.\n        <\/li>\n<p><img alt=\"Floating Shelves Image 21\" height=\"300\" src=\n        \"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/floating-shelves-21.jpg\"\n        width=\"400\"\/><\/p>\n<li>In this case, I didn\u2019t have a countersink bit small enough (no! I<br \/>\n        don\u2019t have everything!). Therefore, I used a 10mm HSS bit to<br \/>\n        countersink each hole; the screw heads must not protrude at all<br \/>\n        otherwise you will not be able to seat the shelves properly. <\/li>\n<p><img alt=\n        \"Floating Shelves Image 22\" height=\"300\" src=\n        \"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/floating-shelves-22.jpg\"\n        width=\"400\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Having tapped the spacers out, and clamped the front pieces for<br \/>\n        good measure while the glue cured. <\/li>\n<p><img alt=\"Floating Shelves Image 23\"\n        height=\"300\" src=\n        \"http:\/\/www.azipit.co.za\/mica2014\/wp-content\/themes\/mica-theme\/images\/rodBaker\/floating-shelves-23.jpg\"\n        width=\"400\"\/><\/p>\n<li>Finally, position the base on the wall, drill the required holes in<br \/>\n        the wall, insert plugs, and attach the base to the wall.
